Mental Hospital in AgraAgra is the city of the Taj. It is one of the most visited places in India from the point of tourism. It is also well known for the institution of mental health available here. The prominent facility in mental healthcare is listed below.
The institution was initially known as Agra Lunatic Asylum. It is one of the oldest mental health institutions in the country. An interesting fact about the establishment of this institute concerns the then Lt Governor of Agra, J.R.Colvin. It is said that the gentleman became a lunatic in 1857. This led to the need for a mental asylum in this part of The British-governed area. That is how the Agra lunatic asylum came into existence in 1859. The asylum was initially run by the inspector general of prisons. The situation was hardly conducive to mental health. This resulted in the termination of the administrative control of the asylum by prison administration. It then came under a medical superintendent in 1905. Thus, began the era of improvement and evolution of the institute as it is known today.
It continued to be governed under Indian Lunacy Act 1912 till 1993 although a different set of rules for such institutes were promulgated in 1987. It was in 1993 that the situation changed. The regulations governing it were modified to suit the provisions of Mental Health Act 1987. Hon’ble Supreme Court declared it an autonomous institute in 1994 and it was renamed Agra Mansik Arogyashala. The court also laid certain guidelines to be followed here. The institute was to develop into a place utilizing improved techniques of taking care of the mentally ill. It was also to carry activities that will improve teaching and research. It is now known as Institute of Mental Health and Hospital since 2001.
